More than 40 residents have signed a petition asking Brookhaven’s City Council to postpone a proposed DeKalb County fire station agreement for another 60 days.
The petition seeks more review of alternative locations or designs to limit parkland loss and effects on neighboring homes, Rough Draft Atlanta reported.
The intergovernmental agreement for Station No. 34 is scheduled for consideration Tuesday, Oct. 13. The council meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. at Brookhaven City Centre, 4001 Peachtree Road NE.
The preferred site is a 1.35-acre parcel at 3493 Ashford Dunwoody Road, beside Jo’s Grill near Johnson Ferry Road. County officials say a station there would improve coverage. They report current travel-time performance of 12 minutes and 52 seconds; the cited reporting does not identify that figure as an average or total response time.
The council deferred the agreement in September. Since then, officials have examined other locations, including land near the YMCA, portions of the former Publix site and a Donaldson Drive parcel.
Council member Michael Diaz said the comparison reinforced his support for the original site. He said the revised agreement includes neighborhood protections, while station-access and congestion questions remain under technical review.
Residents continue to raise concerns about traffic, noise, lighting and parkland. Rick Ferguson has requested a traffic study before an agreement is signed.
The council’s consideration of the agreement is open to the public. Residents can submit comments to [email protected]. The city asks commenters to include their name, address and phone number so their comments can be accepted for the record.
