A van struck and killed a 19-year-old construction worker who was placing flags along Lavista Road on Monday, Sept. 14, the DeKalb County Police Department said.

Dylan Wayland was working on the roadway near the intersection of Lavista Road and Wembley Court, close to North Druid Hills Road, when the westbound van left the road, jumped the curb and hit him, according to police. The intersection sits near the Outback Steakhouse and Chili's restaurant in the North Druid Hills area.

DeKalb County police officers responded to the scene around 9:21 a.m. and found Wayland dead from his injuries, Atlanta News First reported.

A DeKalb County Police Department spokesperson told Decaturish that the preliminary investigation shows the van was heading west on Lavista when it veered off the road. The van crossed the curb before striking Wayland, the spokesperson said.

The driver stayed at the scene and was not injured, police said. The department has not released the driver's name.

No charges had been announced as of Monday, Sept. 14. The investigation into the cause of the crash remains open, and police have not provided a timeline for its completion.

The department has not identified the construction company Wayland was working for or described the project that brought him to the road that morning. Fox 5 Atlanta reported that its information came from a DeKalb County Police Department email.
