A 16-year-old now faces 17 felony charges, including two counts of malice murder, after the DeKalb County Sheriff's Office tracked him down in connection with a July 2 drive-by shooting that killed a 13-year-old boy and a 45-year-old man during a sleepover in unincorporated DeKalb County.

The sheriff's Criminal Process Fugitive Unit, working with U.S. Marshals, arrested the teen Tuesday, Aug. 11, at a residence in the 2200 block of Flat Shoals Road in Decatur, according to 11Alive. He had been evading capture since Aug. 5, CBS46 reported.

Authorities have not released the juvenile's name because of his age. He is being held at a local youth detention center. The DeKalb County Sheriff's Office, which has jurisdiction over unincorporated areas surrounding Dunwoody and Brookhaven, is leading the investigation.

The shooting

On July 2, shooters fired dozens of rounds into a home on Rockcliff Road SE, killing 13-year-old Demarcus Shirley and 45-year-old Chauncey Newman. Several young boys were inside the house for a sleepover. No one else was injured.

Shirley did not live at the home; he was visiting for the sleepover, his great-uncle told Atlanta News First. Newman, known in the neighborhood as "Pops," mentored young boys and ran what friends described as an "unofficial group home," according to WSB-TV.

Larenzo Pinkins, who was asleep inside the home when the gunfire erupted, told 11Alive: "We had come upstairs, and I had seen him, and I tried to grab him, and he was dead. Demarcus."

Charges and co-defendant

The 16-year-old faces two counts of malice murder, 10 counts of aggravated assault, four counts of violation of the Street Gang Act and one count of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.

He is the second person arrested in the case. Keyshun Webb, 21, was arrested July 7 in Hampton and faces 11 felony charges, including two counts of murder, eight counts of aggravated assault with a weapon and one count of cruelty to animals.

Arrest warrants indicate the July 2 shootings involved two vehicles and four male suspects, including Webb, according to CBS46's reporting on the documents. Video footage shows Webb was also involved in a separate drive-by shooting the same day, and shell casings at both scenes matched. The warrants describe gang involvement as "likely."

Authorities have not confirmed a motive or stated whether additional suspects are still being sought, Fox 5 Atlanta reported.

Sheriff's response

Sheriff Melody M. Maddox said in a statement that the shooting was a senseless act of violence that took two innocent lives. She said investigators worked closely with U.S. Marshals to locate and arrest the suspect, and that the office will continue pursuing those responsible for violent crimes in the community.

No arraignment date or bond hearing has been publicly announced for either defendant. Two of the four suspects identified in the warrants have not been publicly named or arrested.
