Jayden Johnson needed 400 yards against Greater Atlanta Christian to become DeKalb County’s career rushing leader. The Stephenson senior delivered 421, helping the Jaguars win 38–35 on Oct. 9.

Johnson carried 38 times and scored four touchdowns in the road victory, according to The Champion Newspaper. The performance moved him past Chamblee’s Roddy Jones, whose 5,055-yard career mark had stood since 2006.

The Champion credited Johnson with 5,077 career yards after the game. Georgia Public Broadcasting reported a total one yard lower, but both accounts confirmed the record.

Johnson also overtook Tucker’s Patrick Pass, who rushed for 5,044 yards from 1992 through 1995.

Jones, who went on to play at Georgia Tech and become an ESPN and ABC analyst, welcomed Johnson’s achievement.

“The numbers he is putting up are insane,” Jones said in The Champion’s report.

He also recognized Stephenson’s offensive line and coaching staff, saying the record reflected their contributions alongside Johnson’s talent.

Johnson reached his reported total on 571 carries, compared with 808 for Jones and 647 for Pass, according to The Champion.

His production has grown sharply since his freshman season, when he rushed for 229 yards. He followed with 1,369 yards and 10 touchdowns as a sophomore, then 2,099 yards and 23 touchdowns as a junior. During both seasons, he shared the backfield with Anthony Booker, another 1,000-yard rusher.

Stephenson coach Marcus Jelks praised Johnson’s elusiveness and speed, along with his willingness to learn. Opposing coaches Marion Bell of Southwest DeKalb and Lonnie Jones of Tucker also highlighted his toughness and ability to find running lanes, according to The Champion.

Against Greater Atlanta Christian, Johnson’s final two touchdowns helped Stephenson build a 38–28 advantage with 6:13 left. The Jaguars held on for their fourth consecutive victory, improving to 6–1 overall and 3–0 in Region 5-4A.

Stephenson added a 7–6 win over Douglass on Oct. 16. That result brought the Jaguars to 7–1 overall and 4–0 in the region, with a five-game winning streak, according to MaxPreps.

The Jaguars visit Westminster on Friday, Oct. 23, at 7:30 p.m. They finish the regular season at home against North Springs on Oct. 30 at 7 p.m.
