The gunman who fatally shot 26-year-old Tyler Seiber on I-285 near Buford Highway also stole Seiber's phone to eliminate photographic evidence of the hit-and-run that preceded the killing, the victim's mother told The Champion Newspaper in an account published Friday, July 31.

"In his effort to hold the driver accountable, Tyler took photos of the man and his vehicle. Tragically, the driver responded with violence, shooting Tyler multiple times and stealing his phone to destroy the evidence," Christa Seiber said.

The phone-theft allegation and confirmation that Seiber was shot multiple times are details not included in the Ledger's earlier reporting on the fatal July 23 shooting near the Buford Highway exit. DeKalb County police have not independently confirmed the phone-theft claim.

What happened on July 23

Tyler Seiber was following his father, Anton Seiber, home on I-285 late on Thursday, July 23, when another driver cut between their vehicles and struck Anton's car, sending it spinning across traffic, according to WSB-TV. Tyler stopped to check on his father around 10:30 p.m., then got back in his truck to follow the hit-and-run driver and photograph the vehicle.

Both drivers stopped near the Buford Highway exit. Police say the other man pulled a gun and shot Tyler before driving away with his phone.

Anton Seiber told WSB-TV on July 26 that the family and police tracked the phone's signal until it went dark, finding only the phone case at the location where the signal died.

No suspect identified

More than a week after the shooting, DeKalb County police have not named a suspect, released a vehicle description, or announced any arrests. The department confirmed it is still actively investigating.

A GoFundMe campaign organized by Christa Seiber to cover funeral expenses had raised more than $10,000 as of July 31.
