An Atlanta man is facing insurance fraud and forgery charges after state investigators say he filed a bogus $18,000 claim following a burglary report to the Dunwoody Police Department.

Darrion Deneen Lucius, 39, reported that more than $18,000 worth of personal belongings had been stolen from him and then filed a claim with Lemonade Insurance seeking reimbursement, according to the Georgia Office of the Commissioner of Insurance and Safety Fire. During the claims process, investigators allege Lucius submitted a counterfeit bank statement as proof he had purchased the items.

Investigators obtained DeKalb County warrants for insurance fraud and forgery on Jan. 8.

Lucius was arrested by Cobb County police on July 22 on unrelated charges. He was transferred to the DeKalb County Sheriff's Office on Aug. 3.

He remains in custody.

Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner John F. King announced the charges on Aug. 19, crediting investigators from his office along with the Cobb County Sheriff's Office and DeKalb County Sheriff's Office. King said his office will pursue anyone who submits forged documents to back an insurance claim.

How the case connects to Dunwoody

The fraud case originated from a burglary report filed with the Dunwoody Police Department. That report became the basis for the Lemonade Insurance claim, which investigators say Lucius then tried to substantiate with a forged bank statement.

The nature of the unrelated Cobb County charges has not been disclosed. No court date for the fraud and forgery case has been announced.
