Dunwoody Police Department is collecting donations so local children can shop for holiday gifts alongside first responders during the 2026 holiday season.

The department announced on X on Oct. 26 that it has partnered with DeKalb Fire Rescue, American Medical Response (AMR) and ChatComm for the 2026 "Christmas for Kids: Shop with a Hero" program. The initiative pairs school-aged children identified by local schools with police officers, firefighters and other first responders for a supervised shopping trip.

The program has run since 2009, but the "Shop with a Hero" format is new for 2026. According to the city's program page, the Dunwoody Police Department is working with participating local schools to select students.

How to donate

The Dunwoody Police Foundation, a registered 501(c)(3), handles all monetary donations. The city says 100% of funds go toward toys, gifts and supplies for program events. Cash and gift cards are not accepted.

Residents can donate at dunwoodypolicefoundation.org by clicking the "Donate" button and writing "Christmas for Kids program" in the notes section.

The department also promoted a Community Care Day at Chick-fil-A Dunwoody on Oct. 23, where a portion of sales was to benefit the program.

The shopping event date and retail location have not yet been announced. Residents with questions can email [email protected] or call 678-382-6903.
