Dunwoody Police charged a MARTA bus driver after video showed him falling asleep at the wheel before a crash that injured three passengers.

The driver faces two charges: distracted driving and failure to maintain lane. The charges stem from a Sept. 7 crash on North Shallowford Road near Peachford Road in Dunwoody that police initially could not explain. At the time, officials had not confirmed why the bus left its lane. Now, video evidence and the criminal charges point to the driver dozing off behind the wheel.

11Alive first reported the charges Monday, Sept. 14. Video the station obtained shows the driver with both hands off the steering wheel, eyes closing moments before impact. The collision jolts him awake. He tries to regain control of the bus.

The bus struck a tree head-on and came to rest leaning down a slight embankment along North Shallowford Road, according to 11Alive. The windshield shattered completely. The tree snapped on impact, sending branches onto cars parked below the embankment. 11Alive Photojournalist Mike Nicolas observed heavy front-end damage after the bus was pulled from the slope.

Three passengers reported injuries at the scene on Sept. 7. Their medical conditions have not been released.

On the day of the crash, MARTA confirmed the incident in a statement to 11Alive, acknowledging three people were claiming injuries. A week later, a MARTA spokesperson said in a statement that the agency is reviewing the incident and that rider and employee safety remains its highest priority.

Police have not released the driver's name.

The charges are the first official finding of fault in the crash. When the bus went off the road Sept. 7, Fox 5 Atlanta reported that emergency crews responded but that the cause was unknown.
