DeKalb County School District opens its third round of community input on school boundary changes Oct. 27. A public comment session for Dunwoody, Chamblee and Cross Keys cluster families is set for Nov. 5 at Dunwoody High School.
The engagement window runs through Nov. 12 and includes an online survey, focus groups and meetings of the Community Advisory Teams guiding the Student Assignment Project, according to the district's SAP webpage. The survey opens Oct. 27 and closes Nov. 10.
Separately, District 6 board member Dijon DaCosta Sr. is hosting a community conversation Oct. 29 at Stephenson High School with Superintendent Dr. Norman C. Sauce III and State Rep. Venola Mason of District 94. The session will cover redistricting, enrollment trends and legislative issues, DeKalb Schools said on X. Families can register through the district's event form.
The redistricting effort, known as the Student Assignment Project, is driven by roughly 20,000 open seats across the county as enrollment has declined, Atlanta News First reported in September. An earlier version of the plan was paused after parents argued their voices were not being heard. District leaders restarted the process in September with six public comment sessions.
The current phase focuses on overcrowded schools in the Lakeside, Cross Keys, Chamblee, Tucker, Dunwoody and Druid Hills clusters. New and expanded schools are set to open between 2027 and 2029. They include Dresden Elementary, Cross Keys High School, Sequoyah Middle School, Sequoyah High School, Idlewood Elementary School and a new high school cluster.
"We have not drawn attendance lines yet, we're getting feedback a variety of ways," Jennifer Caracciolo, the district's deputy chief communications officer, told Atlanta News First in September.
A second phase starting in January 2027 will address under-enrolled schools in the Towers, McNair, Cedar Grove, Miller Grove, Columbia and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. clusters.
The Nov. 5 public comment session at Dunwoody High School runs from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Community Advisory Team meetings are scheduled for Nov. 10 and Nov. 12.
