A U.S. Department of Homeland Security officer faces eight criminal charges after allegedly shooting a neighbor during a late-night dispute at a DeKalb County apartment complex.
Quadrus Wilson, 49, of Marietta, was indicted Oct. 22 by a DeKalb County grand jury on two counts of aggravated assault, false imprisonment, two counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, first-degree criminal damage to property, terroristic threats and criminal trespass, according to a DeKalb County District Attorney's Office press release dated Oct. 23.
The charges stem from an incident around 2:30 a.m. on July 27 at an apartment complex on Treecrest Parkway in unincorporated Decatur.
According to the DA's office, Wilson was visiting a family member's apartment to celebrate his birthday when he got into an argument with his relative's boyfriend. Wilson left briefly but returned, banged on the door and yelled "police." His family member barricaded the door to keep him out.
An upstairs neighbor told DeKalb County police he heard screaming and banging for about an hour before opening his front door while armed with a rifle to ask about the noise.
Wilson allegedly went upstairs with his gun drawn, identified himself as a police officer and ordered the neighbor to drop his weapon. The neighbor retreated into his apartment and closed the door, though it remained slightly cracked open, investigators said.
Wilson is accused of opening the door, again demanding the man drop his gun and firing several shots into the apartment. The man was struck in the right arm. His identity and condition beyond the arm wound have not been released.
Wilson remained at the scene and told responding DeKalb County police officers he was a DHS officer. He was taken into custody and has remained in the DeKalb County Jail without bond, according to the DA's office.
The DeKalb County District Attorney's Anti-Corruption Unit is prosecuting the case. It has been assigned to DeKalb County Superior Court Judge Josh Geller. Wilson will be scheduled for an arraignment, after which a trial date may be set, the DA's office said.
No statement from DHS regarding Wilson's specific role within the agency or his employment status following the arrest appears in available public records. Fox 5 Atlanta, 11Alive and Patch reported on the indictment Oct. 27.
