Brookhaven's District 4 town hall on Wednesday, Oct. 28 will cover the contentious Southern Connector Bridge, the $605 million Northbend development and the proposed 2027 budget.
Mayor Pro Tempore and District 4 Council Member John Funny announced the quarterly meeting, scheduled for 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Brookhaven PEP Building, 2665 Buford Hwy. Residents can also join by Zoom, according to the city's announcement.
The five-item agenda includes the Brookhaven Southern Connector Bridge, the Buford Highway Streetscape project, the Briarcliff Road and LaVista Road intersection improvement, the Northbend development and the proposed 2027 budget. Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) representatives will attend to provide updates on their projects in Brookhaven.
Southern Connector Bridge back on agenda after heated summer meeting
The Southern Connector Bridge has drawn the most public attention of any item on the agenda. The proposed $23 million project would build a roadway with a multi-use path across I-85 between Buford Highway and Chantilly Drive, plus a single-lane roundabout. It is 80% federally funded with a 20% local match, and construction is not expected to begin until 2030, Rough Draft Atlanta reported.
The project has been part of Brookhaven's transportation planning since 2019. But a community meeting on Aug. 26 turned contentious when Lavista Park residents shouted over presenters, accusing the city of inviting cut-through traffic onto their streets.
"Our job is to listen carefully, examine the facts, and make decisions that are the best for the community," Funny said at the opening of that August meeting, before attendees began shouting over presenters. He said at the time that the city would respond to unanswered questions and hold another public meeting on the bridge in February 2027.
Northbend and the 2027 budget
The Northbend development, a $605 million mixed-use project replacing the 30-acre Corporate Square office park along I-85, is also on the agenda. Developer Third & Urban and capital partner HighBrook Investors received Brookhaven rezoning for the project as a Master-Planned Development, Urbanize Atlanta reported in October 2025. The initial phase calls for nearly 700 residences, 10,000 square feet of retail and a one-acre public plaza.
Mayor John Park described Northbend as a major example of smart growth during his Sept. 24 state-of-the-city address, Rough Draft Atlanta reported. The project is expected to generate $8.2 million in annual tax revenue for Brookhaven when completed.
Budget details have not been released.
Residents who want to attend in person or by Zoom can find the agenda and link on the city's website. Funny has said a separate public meeting on the Southern Connector Bridge is planned for February 2027.
