Free school supplies, haircuts, bounce houses, and a touch-a-truck are all coming to the Brookhaven Police Station on Tuesday, August 4, when the department hosts its National Night Out and Back-to-School Fair.

The event runs from 6 to 9 p.m. at 1793 Briarwood Road and is free to attend, according to the Brookhaven Police Department. Families can pick up school supplies, grab free food, and let kids enjoy games and bounce houses while parents connect with community resources and meet local officers.

National Night Out is a nationwide annual event aimed at strengthening police-community ties. Brookhaven's version doubles as a practical back-to-school resource for families heading into the new academic year.

Dunwoody Police will hold its own National Night Out the same evening, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Pavilion at Brook Run Park, according to the department's social media page.

Free play series explores American identity

Later in August, the City of Brookhaven and Out of Hand Theater will present "We Hold These Truths," a free series of short plays and guided discussions, on Saturday, August 15, at St. Martin in the Fields Episcopal Church.

The program marks the 250th anniversary of the United States and features four short plays examining democracy, immigration, and belonging. After the performances, attendees will share meals and participate in facilitated conversations using Out of Hand Theater's "Equitable Dinners" model.

"By bringing performance, shared meals, and guided dialogue into one setting, we're inviting honest and critical conversations about what it means to be American today and where we go from here," Adria Kitchens, co-executive director of Out of Hand Theater, said in a city press release.

Ariel Fristoe, the theater company's founder and co-executive director, said the event aims to build connections across communities at a time when conversations about identity feel polarized. Registration is available at outofhandtheater.com.
