About 25 young performers sang, danced, and acted out scenes from the musical "Wicked" on Saturday, July 18, capping five weeks of Saturday morning rehearsals at Stage Door Theatre in Dunwoody.

The cast ranged in age from 10 to 22. All were participants in the Down Syndrome Association of Atlanta's musical theatre summer camp, which used the theater for weekly rehearsals leading up to the closing showcase, according to a report by Appen Media's Hannah Yahne.

Three Dunwoody-area organizations made the production possible. The Down Syndrome Association of Atlanta ran the camp itself. Stage Door Theatre, located inside the Dunwoody Cultural Arts Center at 5339 Chamblee Dunwoody Road, hosted rehearsals and the July 18 performance. Volunteers from the Dunwoody Woman's Club helped produce the show.

Denise Arribas, the camp's engagement director, said the performers thrived onstage.

"These individuals in our community love being on stage and performing," Arribas told Appen Media. "With encouragement and support, the sky is the limit for individuals with Down syndrome."

Arribas called the five-week experience "a true joy and pleasure," noting the growth she observed in the students over the course of the program.

The showcase featured a full collection of songs, dances, and scenes drawn from "Wicked," the long-running Broadway musical. Performers sang together during the final number, according to a photo published with the Appen Media report.

The camp held all of its rehearsals on Saturday mornings, a schedule that allowed participants to build skills week by week before performing for an audience of family and community members on July 18.

The Down Syndrome Association of Atlanta, based on Peachtree Road in Atlanta, partners with local organizations to create programming for individuals with Down syndrome and their families. The Dunwoody Woman's Club, a member of the General Federation of Women's Clubs, has volunteered in the Dunwoody community since 1971.
