Oglethorpe University's women's soccer team took its first loss of the season on Sunday, Sept. 20, falling 3-1 to Christopher Newport University at home in Brookhaven.

The Petrels dropped to 2-1-1 on the year.

Christopher Newport, which was ranked No. 25 in the preseason coaches poll and was still receiving votes in the most recent national poll, opened the scoring in the 22nd minute. Oglethorpe held the 1-0 deficit through halftime and deep into the second half. Evan Thomas generated two scoring chances in the first half but could not convert either.

CNU doubled its lead on a deflection in the 63rd minute, pushing the score to 2-0. Myleigh Oglesby answered 11 minutes later, capitalizing on a deflection of her own in the 74th minute to pull the Petrels within 2-1 for her second goal of the season. The score breathed life into Oglethorpe's attack, but CNU's Ellie Diehl restored the two-goal cushion in the 84th minute to close the door at 3-1.

Oglethorpe split goalkeeper duties across the halves. Freshman Masha Renggli started and recorded five saves before the break. Graduate student Katherine Crim took over in the second half and made eight saves. Crim and Oglesby both earned All-SAA Honorable Mention recognition following the 2025 season, per the Southern Athletic Association. Crim's eight-save effort kept the Petrels within striking distance even as CNU pressed in the final 20 minutes.

The Captains' combination of early pressure and late finishing proved too much for an Oglethorpe side that had opened the season 2-0-1 before the Sept. 20 matchup.

The Petrels travel to LaGrange College on Tuesday, Sept. 22, for a 7 p.m. kickoff according to the Oglethorpe schedule. They return home to host rival Emory University on Friday, Sept. 25, at 7:30 p.m. in Brookhaven.
