DeKalb County's first property tax installment is due Wednesday, Sept. 30, and the tax commissioner's office is adding evening hours at its Decatur headquarters to handle the rush.
Homeowners paying the full year in one lump sum must also pay by Sept. 30.
Starting Monday, Sept. 21, the central office at 4380 Memorial Drive in Decatur will stay open until 6 p.m. through the deadline, Rough Draft Atlanta reported. Walk-in customers have been rerouted to the UGA Extension entrance at the front of the building since Sept. 17 and will continue using it through Sept. 30. Customers with disabilities may still enter through the main door off Northern Avenue.
Tax Commissioner Nicole Golden said in a Sept. 20 release that the central office will see long lines and wait times the week before the deadline. She urged homeowners who prefer to pay in person to visit the satellite offices at South DeKalb Mall or Clairmont Road instead.
Both satellites are open 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday:
- North Office: 3653 Clairmont Road, Chamblee
- South DeKalb Mall: 2801 Candler Road, Suite 66, Decatur
Online and phone payments
The tax office accepts payments around the clock at DeKalbTaxGA.gov and by phone at 678-501-7995. Paying by e-check carries no processing fee. Credit cards, debit cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal and Venmo are also accepted online, but processing fees apply.
Secure drop boxes at all three offices accept checks in sealed envelopes. Cash is not accepted in drop boxes.
What to bring
Homeowners paying in person need their tax bill stub and a valid Georgia ID or driver's license. The central office requires security screening. Accepted payment methods include e-check, credit or debit card, check and money order.
Mail warning
Mailed payments must carry a U.S. Postal Service postmark by the due date. Metered or kiosk postage dates do not count. The tax office cautioned homeowners to consider other payment methods because of ongoing mail delivery issues.
Homeowners who have not received a bill can look it up at DeKalbTaxGA.gov or call 404-298-4000. The tax commissioner's office does not mail bills to mortgage companies.
The second installment is due Nov. 15, a Sunday. The effective deadline is Monday, Nov. 16.
